NEWSFLASH: Chaos in Tshwane council

Chaos at council meeting

There was chaos during a special council meeting of the Tshwane council on Thursday as councillors argued about procedures and the absence of certain members.

The ANC’s Mapiti Matsena lashed out at the city management when some the party’s councillors were barred entry to the sitting.

“Our councillors were turned back for not carrying access cards. The DA-led council is using apartheid style tactics to turn back our members.”

“Our members cannot be expected to carry cards like during the apartheid era when people were expected to carry dompases,” said Matsena.

Matsena also slated the speaker, Katlego Rachel Matheba, for failing to publicise the special sitting.

“This council meeting was not publicised in terms of the act in the newspapers. The act is very clear on that, members of the public must know there is a sitting so they can attend it but you (speaker) failed to do that.”

There were further disruptions when ANC councillor Joe Masilela stormed out of the chamber, accusing mayor Solly Msimanga of insulting him.

“Msimanga is disrespectful and a disgrace, he can’t come here and insult me and the speaker doesn’t do anything. I will take up this matter with the rules and ethics committee,” said Masilela.

The ANC in the council has also rebelled against Matheba, accusing her of being biased to the DA and the EFF.
