27 December declared a public holiday

Tuesday, 27 December will be a public holiday, the Presidency confirmed on Monday.

Presidency spokesperson Bongani Ngqulunga said the decision was made as workers in the country would only have 11 public holidays instead of 12 this year because Christmas day fell on a Sunday.

He said according to section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act, 1994, “whenever a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be a public holiday”.

“However, as 26 December is also a public holiday the two overlap,” said Ngqulunga.

He said making 27 December a public holiday would ensure workers still got their 12 paid public holidays.
