A Pretoria artist is now allowing self-taught artists to exhibit at his pop-up gallery.

Elpee Anathi Nkanyuza used to work in art galleries in the Cape, but decided to go solo and start a pop-up gallery called, Elpee’s Art Pop-up Gallery.

Nkanyuza said he decided to start his own business as other, academically trained artists, were not keen on the fact that he was self-taught.

“I exhibited at galleries in the Eastern and Western Cape before I made the decision to start my own,” said Nkanyuza.

“Most galleries and artists were impressed with my work but eventually undermine and underestimate me when I told them I was self-taught.”

He said the criticism of not being academically trained dashed his spirits for a while.

In 2013 however, Nkanyuza created Facebook and Twitter pages to showcase his work to the public.

“I realised my aim wasn’t just about getting my name out there but to uplift other self-taught artists as well because they are the ones disadvantaged in the industry,” said Nkanyuza.

Nkanyuza said in 2015 he realised he was not going to get his business off the ground in Eastern Cape, and decided to move to Pretoria.

“That is where I became really motivated.

I connected with other artists and built a relationship with other galleries in and out of Gauteng.”

Nkanyuza said his move to Pretoria allowed him to attend a lot more art events, and, as a result in 2016, galleries around the CBD were keen on taking him in to showcase his art.

He said he worked at a art gallery for a while, but resigned when he realised he was still far from achieving his goal.

“Ever since my resignation from the gallery, I’ve been working tirelessly to achieve my goal of helping other artists make it.”

Nkanyuza said he has grouped with artists he met during his time at the gallery.

“At the moment I have two visual artists under the gallery and two more external artists.”

“We also collaborated with Rand Circle and have managed to hook up two projects so far where we will be doing art with a school and the other project I am working with children at a children’s centre.”

Elpee’s Art Pop-up Gallery is a mobile art gallery.
