A foreign national’s attempt to escape the law by bribing a police officer backfired massively on Friday morning in Sunnyside and has found himself in hot water.

According to the police the Eritrean offered one of the police officers money to let him off the hook after he was found selling alcohol without the necessary documentation.

“The 32-year-old man reportedly handed R700 to a police officer after he was found inside a tuck shop this morning, selling liquor without a licence. The alleged bribe money and illegal spirits were seized,” said police spokesman Daniel Mavimbela.

Mavimbela said the man will appear in court soon.

“The suspect will face charges of bribery and selling liquor without a licence. He will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court,” he said.
