Bogus police a concern for Pretorians

Brooklyn police urge motorists to be extra vigilant even when they are pulled over by police.

This comes after an escalating number of bogus attacks in Gauteng.

Brooklyn police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said on Friday that crimes where criminals dress up like police officers were becoming common.

“If a police officer stops you in the middle of the road, indicate to them that you’ll only make a stop at the nearest public place or filling station,” she said.

“If they are real officers, they won’t have a problem with that.”

Weilbach said if motorists do decide to stop, they had the right to ask for the officers’ credentials.

“At times, it can be difficult to tell between a real officer and a bogus one. People should always be vigilant and check for name tags or registration numbers(police vehicles).”

On Tuesday, two men and a woman, dressed in police uniform robbed a motorist near Olievenhoutbosch.

Spokesperson for the Centurion Concerned Citizens (CCC), Hannes du Buisson said the three perpetrators posed as police officers at the intersection when they pulled over a member of the community.

“The robbers (who were on foot) escorted him(motorist) to Olievenhoutbosch to draw money and took all his belongings, including bank cards, a cellphone and cash.”

On Tuesday night, a group of robbers claiming to be police were involved in the OR Tambo international airport heist.

They fled with 27 parcels of foreign currency together with an undisclosed amount of money.

The two vehicles which was used by the robbers and has police marks, were recovered in Mamelodi.

On Thursday, Acting national police commissioner Lt-General Khomotso Phahlane said the vehicles used to commit the cash heist at the OR Tambo international airport were bogus and did not belong to the SAPS.
