Water Wednesday: Water restrictions lifted in Gauteng and dam update

The City of Johannesburg announced on Monday, 13 March that it would be lifting some of the water restrictions around the city.

The reason for the decision was the recent rains that flowed into the Integrated Vaal River System, consisting of 14 dams which mainly serve Gauteng.

Despite the lift, the City of Johannesburg urged residents to still save water.

The Citizen reported that Joburg’s MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Nico de Jager, welcomed the department’s move to lift the restrictions but said that South Africa remained a water scarce country. De Jager also stated that the City of Johannesburg remains a net importer of water. He said that the biggest threat at this interim stage was the demand exceeding supply of water.

The Integrated Vaal River System has been increasing week on week and was at 95.9% as per the readings dated 6 March.

Meanwhile Water and Sanitation minister Nomvula Mokonyane visited the British American Tobacco South Africa’s Heidelberg factory. The factory is the eighth largest within the BAT group internationally and the first to invest in rain water harvesting technologies aimed at reducing municipal water use.

The visit by the Minister is part of initiatives by the department aimed at promoting alternative technologies.

The factory provided some insight intto their structural set-up and how the rain water harvesting system would work.
