Shootout between police and hijackers in east of Pretoria

A shootout between alleged hijackers and police ensued in the east of Pretoria after a vehicle hijacking on Saturday evening.
It is believed the vehicle was hijacked in Bronkhorstspruit.
It is also alleged that the armed hijackers rolled the Volkswagen Polo on the N4 near Simon Vermooten Road after a shoot-out between themselves and the police.
Martin Barnard, spokesperson for Brinant Security said the victim came from KwaMhlanga and gave a lift to two hitch-hikers who then hijacked the vehicle.
Barnard said when the suspects realised they were being chased by the police, they opened fire.
“The police returned fire and the suspects lost control over the vehicle and fled on foot.”
He said one firearm was recovered in the vehicle.
It is still unclear if the men were apprehended or not, as police were not available for comment.
