The first Afrikaans private residence at the University of Pretoria (UP) opened its doors in 2017 and welcomed its first residents on 28 January.

This week, the Afrikaans only residence sparked media attention again after social activist, Yusuf Abramjee tweeted about.

De Goede Hoop residence accommodates a men’s and women’s hostel. According to an article in the Perdeby, in addition to the standard application, students are required to submit an essay of 150 words on the topic of “Afrikaans shall stay”.

Abramjee said that he had written a letter to the CLR Rights commission to bring the activities of the hostel to its attention. In the letter Abramjee said that the residence was exclusively for Afrikaans and Christian students.

“The university has distanced itself from the residence,” he said.

Abramjee urged the commission to investigate the matter urgently.

“We believe it is against the Constitution and one cannot have a residence for the exclusive use of one race group. Other race groups are clearly being deprived and the policy is simply a disguise to say: ‘Whites only’,” said Abramjee.

The residence’s, Janli Sonntag said that the essay did not determine admission.

“The essay was only to get students opinions on the matter of Afrikaans.

The hostel is not based on a racial quota,” Sonntag said.

The university has taken notice of the media inquiry. Comment is being awaited. Read the full article in Rekord East of 28 March.
