Local juniors win tennis titles in Bloemfontein

Several junior tennis players from Gauteng North won titles at the recent Dunlop Free State tournament.

The tournament took place at the Free State Tennis stadium in Bloemfontein.

Local players came home with four singles titles, while some of the Pretoria players also won doubles titles with their partners.

A further three local players made the semi-finals, but were unfortunately eliminated.
Players were in action in four categories.

Boys and girls were involved in games for u.12, u.14 and u.16, while an open section for junior men and women were also part of the tournament.

In the u.12 girls division two local players made the final.

Carlé Botha beat Nadia Gouws (6-2, 6-3).  Botha, currently the top-seeded South African girl in this age group, was also the number one seeded player for the tournament, while Gouws was seeded number two.

Bianca Koen from Gauteng North made it to the final in the division for junior women, but unfortunately lost against Myah Petcey from the Western Province.

Pretoria’s boys dominated the tournament by winning three out of the four singles categories.
Devin Bardenhorst (u.14) beat Jordan Gancho (Gauteng East) 6-3 and 6-1.

Victor Putter was crowned the u.16 champion when he beat Robbie Arends from Boland (2-6, 6-1, 10-7) and Lleyton Cronjé took the title in the junior men’s division by beating Justin Liebenberg form Gauteng Central (1-6, 6-4, 10-6).

Another local player, Gerhard Swart, was eliminated by Liebenberg in the semi-final.
In the doubles, local players Nadia Gouws and Carli Kruger teamed up in the u.12 division. and managed to beat Leané Engelbrecht and Leila Nel from Eastern province 6-3, 6-3.

Victor Putter won his second title at the tournament when he and his partner, Alec Beckley from Gauteng Central, beat the Boland pair Robbie Arends and Wikus Robbertse in the u.16 division.
The score was 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.
