Speeding on Stellenberg Road in Equestria has been a major concern for residents for a long time.

After the Rekord’s recent article about accidents of the road, a mother came forward to share the tragedy she endured three years ago.

Nicola Kruyshaar of Faerie Glen said that her son, Wickus Steyn (22) lost his life on Stellenberg Road on 1 March 2014.

Wickus was a golf student at HCP at the time.

“He was driving home from his friend’s place around 00:30.”

She said when Steyn came round the very sharp turn, he hit the drain, the car’s front wheel burst and he lost control and crashed into a tree.

“The autopsy results showed that he lived for a half an hour before dying on scene.”

She said that two days later, a woman contacted her to tell her that a week earlier her son had had an accident on the same road. “He only had minor injuries.”

A week after Steyn’s accident a third accident took place on the road. “I felt so powerless.”

Kruyshaar said that she regularly visited the accident scene. “It is my way of spending time with Wickus.” She said that during the visits she noticed that many people still sped on this road.

She said that she too wished for speed bumps on this road. “This accident and the dangers of the road had such huge impact on our lives. I would do anything to save other mothers from the pain that I have felt.”

A resident Theo Marais recently said that this road was a deathtrap because there were no speed humps and warning signs.

Tshwane metro spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo said that the metro police would visit the site to investigate.“With regards to the road safety signage, we have brought the matter to the attention of the Transport Department for possible intervention. We shall revert [to you] as soon as we receive feedback from them.”
