UPDATE: Metrorail investigating cause of arson attack

Metrorail investigators are probing the cause of a train fire in Wonderboom, north of Pretoria, on Thursday afternoon.

Acting spokesman Tony Games said: “Our investigators are still looking into the case. The train burnt at about 16:30 and about five coaches were gutted.”

He said a case of arson had been opened with the police.

“The police are also looking into the matter but it is not clear what caused the fire,” said Games.

“Some say it was commuters while others say it was due to a technical fault.”

Tshwane emergency services responded to the fire but had to wait for a go-ahead from Prasa before they could extinguish the fire.

No one was injured.
