EFF students suspended for ‘holding staff hostage’

EFF wants University of Pretoria to lift the suspension on their four members accused of allegedly holding a staff member hostage two weeks ago.

Economic Freedom Fighters student command chairperson at Tuks, Kabelo Mahlobogwane, said the party was in talks with the university to lift the ban.

“The hearing is still ongoing and we trust that the students would be welcomed back on campus soon.”

Mahlobogwane said the party was disappointed that the university did not say on how long their suspension would be, or if they were guilty of such misconduct.

UP spokesperson Rikus Delport said the students were allowed to write their exams despite their suspension.

“On 26 May, students associated with the EFF UP branch took a UP staff member hostage in the library.

“The situation was swiftly dealt with by campus security and the police, and the victim received support and counselling.” he said,

Delport said the four students were immediately suspended pending a disciplinary hearing.

“While the students will be allowed to write exams, the disciplinary process will resume in the second semester. The University of Pretoria has no tolerance for violence against women and is treating this incident in the most serious light,” he said.
