Monday’s planned home affairs national strike has been called off.

The department announced at a press briefing in Centurion on Saturday, it and the union had reached agreement on Thursday.

The department said it resolved the outstanding issues with the Public Servants Association (PSA), National Health, Education and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) and National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (Nupsaw), which included working hours.

The unions had objected to home affairs staff working on Saturdays, a six-day week.

They argued that since working on Saturdays would cost employees extra in transportation and baby-minders for mothers, the department had to up their pay.

They also said the six-day working week ought to earn staff more leave days.

The department said it was not in a financial position to accede extra pay demands but proposed a rotating roster giving staffers a day off during the week instead.

The department also agreed to withdraw a memo that forced staff to work on Saturdays without overtime pay.

“We will negotiate in a way that satisfies both the employer and employees,” the department’s Nkidi Mohoboko said on Saturday.

Unions called off the planned strike, issued on 6 June, and the parties agreed to a further consultation on working hours.
