World Population Day: 5 Things you need to know

World Population Day seeks to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues. The day was established by the then-Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, an outgrowth of the interest generated by the Day of Five Billion, which was observed on 11 July 1987.

The theme for this year is “Family Planning: Empowering People, Developing Nations”

According to the UN World Population Prospects report, the world’s population numbered nearly 7.6 billion as of mid-2017. Here are key indicators of the world’s population.

The world’s population is projected to increase by slightly more than one billion people over the next 13 years.

4. Africa’s projected growth in the future

According to the UN report, Nigeria will overtake the United States to become the third-most populous country in the world by 2050. Nigeria is currently the seventh most populous country in the world, the West African nation is projected to surpass the 300 million people mark by 2050. Highest population growth rates in Africa between 2010 and 2015:

  • Nigeria experienced an annual population growth of about 2.7%.
  • The Democratic Republic of Congo is the largest country in Africa with a population growth of 3.2 %.
  • Tanzania has experienced an annual population growth rate of 3.2%.
  • Uganda has one of the fastest growing populations in the world with a growth rate of 3.3%.
  • Ethiopia is the second-most populous country in Africa with a 2.5% growth rate.

5. South Africa’s growth rates:

According to the report South Africa’s population will grow to 65 million by 2030 from the current 57 million.
