A would-be robber was shot dead in a house in Faerie Glen on Friday evening.

A 28-year-old resident inside the house sustained a gunshot wound to his arm in an apparent shootout with armed intruders.

A social media user wrote on Facebook that her neighbour was attacked by an unknown number of suspects who jumped over the fence in Limberg Avenue.

“Several shots were fired, it sounded like fireworks,” the neighbour wrote.

GCS security was first on scene.

“In two minutes after the shooting was reported to us, we arrived on scene,” said Riaan Volschenk from GCS.

Volschenk said reaction officer Jaco Myburg was the first to arrive at the house, but by then the would-be robbers had fled.

“The people living in the house were taken by surprise by apparently two armed men. They were braaiing outside when the suspects jumped over the fence,” said Volschenk.

“Luckily the homeowner also had a firearm to defend himself and his family.”

Volschenk said one of the robbers was shot and the other fled.

“He sustained a moderate injury to his arm and was transported to a nearby hospital,” said spokesperson Annine Siddall

“The suspected robber, a man believed to be in his twenties, was declared dead by other emergency services on scene.”

Further detail, Siddall said, would form part of police investigations.
