A man was arrested for allegedly breaking into a house in Die Wilgers in the east of Pretoria on Tuesday morning.

“Shortly after 10:00 a [Comsafe security] officer reacted to a call-out in Die Wilgers,” said police spokesperson Captain Ilze Jones.

“On arrival, he found an unknown man at a gate who appeared to have been one of three suspects who broke into the house.”

Jones said the perpetrator approached the officer and held him up at gunpoint before taking his pistol.

She said Garsfontein Crime Prevention arrived on the scene shortly thereafter.

“When they reacted, the security officer managed to escape by jumping over a wall.”

Police managed to arrest the man, but the other two perpetrators, who were still inside the house, escaped by using the back entrance.

Jones said the alleged burglars hijacked a vehicle while making their escape.

“Quick reaction and communication lead to the recovery of the hijacked vehicle only minutes after the incident.”

She said the owner only found out her house had been broken into when she received a call from police.

Jones said the vehicle initially used by the perpetrators, that had been left in the driveway, had been stolen in Honeydew in August.
