Hunt for Kameeldrift robbers launched

A gang of eight armed men are still at large after they allegedly shot two men near Kameeldrift Primary School on Friday night during a robbery – only to get away with just a cellphone.

Police had not yet commented on the crime, but it is understood that a massive hunt had been launched for the criminal gang.

Hercules Sector 4 chairperson Jan Nell said it was not the first time the gang had been involved in a robbery in the Kameeldrift area.

He said a similar robbery happened on Thursday not far from the school where some of the gang members targeted another house in Kameeldrift.

“About seven to eight men were involved in Fridays robbery but we are not sure how many were involved on Thursday.”

Nell said this was not the first time the same plot was targeted.

One of the patients died in theatre at the hospital.

Nell said he strongly suspected it was the same criminals who attacked another residence on Thursday night in the same area.

“They kicked down a door and fled with the resident’s laptop on Thursday night,” said Nell.

Two people at the residence were shot in the upper body on Thursday, Best Care Ambulance spokesperson Xander Loubser said.

“One of the men was shot once and died in theatre and the other shot four times remained in a serious condition,” said Loubser.

Loubser said a female resident sprayed pepper spray during the robbery, making it difficult for emergency personnel to breathe or see at the crime scene.

Loubser said the victims were in their 20’s and were stabilised and transported to a nearby hospital.

He thanked all Hercules CPF members that were there for clearing the intersections for the ambulance on their way out.

“These guys deserved an applause for their assistance.”

Police were still to issue comment.
