Central police arrest 61 for various crimes

A total of 61 lawbreakers were nabbed by police for various crimes at the weekend.

Pretoria Central police spokesperson captain Augustinah Selepe said four people were arrested for fraud, one for drug dealing, seven for common robbery, ten for general theft and one for possession of an unlicenced weapon.

“A total of 29 people were arrested for drug possession, two for drunk driving and one person was arrested for reckless and negligent driving,” said Selepe.

Two people were arrested for being illegal immigrants while three others were arrested and charged for assault with grievous bodily harm.

Selepe said there was an increase in theft out of motor vehicle and theft of motor vehicles in the CBD this weekend.

Two silver Toyotas were stolen last Thursday while the drivers were attending church on the corner of Eeufees and Voortrekker roads.

“These vehicles were being stolen in the parking area and pavements next to churches which made them accessible to criminals. We urge people to activate their alarms and ensure that all doors are properly locked,” she said.

Selepe also urged people to be vigilant when withdrawing money at ATMs and to ensure that ATMs were not tampered with.

“Before withdrawing money be vigilant that there are no suspicious activities and suspicious-looking people around. Check whether the ATM machine had been tampered with,” she said.
