Boy’s cancer battle continues

The situation has worsened for an 11-year-old boy in the east of Pretoria who is battling a rare form of cancer.

Reece Trumplemann, from Bapsfontein, arrived at Steve Biko academic hospital in March with what was assumed to be a broken jaw, only to find he had Gorlin’s syndrome (skin cancer).

His mother Marsha said Reece’s condition has worsened a lot since then and the tumour in his mouth has grown.

“We are appealing to everyone to help us raise money so that Reece can receive the treatment he needs.”

“Reece is going to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg academic hospital on Friday for an MRI and blood tests.”

Some of the blood samples will be taken to the National Health Institute in Dublin to see whether Reece would qualify for treatment at the St Jude children’s hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, USA.

She said plans to take Reece to the US were underway, but the condition was rare in that country and treatment was costly.

Reece, who has to avoid the sun, will need genetic testing to see if he is eligible for the trip overseas.

Marsha said about R60 000 was needed for the genetic testing alone.

“Both his sisters, Abigail (16) and Savanna (19) have unfortunately taken strain playing a motherly role, taking care of their brother.”

About R150 000 was needed to help Marsha and Reece get to America.

She said the balance would contribute towards travel costs, food and accommodation, not the treatment.

“These are tough times,” said Marsha.

In the past months numerous people in their area have donated food and clothing to the 11-year-old.

Anyone who wants to assist in raising money for Reece’s two-month trip to Memphis can contact Marsha on 083 712 7761.
