Two men were beaten to death by an angry mob with their partner arrested in possession of an unlicensed firearm in Mamelodi on Thursday afternoon.

Police constable Connie Moganedi said three men were fleeing from a mob in Mamelodi East, Extension 11.

The three men who were later identified as Mamelodi residents were being chased for allegedly robbing a spaza shop in Lethabong around 14:30.

Moganedi said the men were fleeing on foot from the mob.

“One of the men had a firearm and shot and killed a resident who was among the mob, during the chase. This angered the people even more.”

She said the men eventually got tired and were apprehended by the angry mob.

The two men aged 26 and 32 years, were apprehended and taken back to the Lethabong area where they were beaten and stoned to death.

The third man was still being chased.

Moganedi said the third man aged 24 years, was apprehended minutes later after he had allegedly tried to hijack a Nissan 1400 bakkie.

“The 24-year-old was alleged to have been in possession of a firearm and was apprehended by the mob while in a struggle with the Nissan 1400 driver.

He was also taken back and beaten.

“Police arrived at the scene and found the three suspects lying on the ground. Two men were certified dead and the third [the 24-year-old] was badly injured.”

She said an unlicensed 9mm pistol was found.

“The man was taken to a local hospital and remained under heavy police guard,” said Moganedi.

Police were investigating a murder.

Moganedi said members of the public were reminded to never take the law into their own hands.

She said residents needed to notify police of any criminal activities at all times.
