Man arrested for rape in the CBD

A 16-year-old girl says she was raped in Pretoria Central on Saturday by a man (32) posing as a photographer.

Central police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said the teenager responded to an online advertisement that was looking for models.

“The 16-year-old girl was responding to an ad which stated that the fake agency was looking for models. She was then contacted by this man who told her he was a photographer.”

Selepe said the man told the girl the photo shoot was at the State Theatre and suggested the teenager change into the clothes she would be wearing for the shoot at his flat, as it was close by.

“When they got to the flat, the man then allegedly raped her.”

Selepe said after she was raped, the teenager laid a charge at the police station and gave the address of the man’s flat. Police found the man at the flat and arrested him.

The man appeared briefly in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday. He remains in custody and will appear in court again on 10 October for a bail application.

Selepe urged the youth to be cautious and do more research on modelling agencies before responding to adverts.

“We urge young people to refrain from responding to fraudulent ads because they might end up being victimised,” she said.
