Belgium Campus and Penn State innovative projects resume

Belgium campus and Penn State innovative projects resume.

Belgium Campus students have now began their innovative projects with their Penn State counterparts. Students work together with students from the mechanical and electrical engineering faculties. These classes are done virtually as this allows constant communication between team members required during the design and development process to successfully deliver the final product.

In the last quarter, Belgium Campus students had the opportunity to travel to Penn State University in the USA to exhibit their projects and to attend the RESNA conference in New York. Two groups comprising of students from Belgium Campus and Penn State have worked on two projects named Rapid Target Identification through Mini Drone Swarms and the Hope project.

The Hope project won the prestigious 2016 RESNA Design competition. Students developed a device meant to advance our understanding of how to incorporate tone of voice into augmentative and alternative communication systems. This system provides powerful tools for communication for the disabled and persons with complex communication needs like those suffering from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Winners of this competition have frequently moved on to become leaders in the field of assistive technology.

In 2015, Belgium Campus entered into a partnership with Penn State University in USA which entails joint industry innovation projects between students from Belgium Campus and Penn State. The decision to include Belgium Campus in these international projects was made based on the high level of education that students receive especially in the Software Engineering field.

Belgium Campus widens access to higher education, more specifically into the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematical (STEM) programmes. Belgium Campus is a registered Public Beneficiary organisation and a BBBEE Level 2 contributor. It is also a not for profit registered university with the South African Department of Higher Education and Training.
