A Chinese national accused of bribery and his 36 year-old brother appeared in separate magistrate’s courts in Gauteng on Monday.

The elder elder brother (48) was arrested for allegedly trying to bribe a home affairs official in Pretoria last Thursday.

He apparently offered the official R3 000 to process a passport for his 36-year-old brother.

Police said the official alerted the Pretoria serious corruption unit of the Hawks, which reacted swiftly.

The elder man was nabbed in the act of offering the bribe.

Subsequent investigations led the Hawks to the O.R Tambo International Airport where the younger brother had already boarded the flight to Hong Kong.

“The flight was slightly delayed and the Hawks members just in time to pounce on him.”

The younger brother was found to be in possession of a fraudulent passport.

Upon searching his luggage, the Hawks found polished diamonds, ivory, 10kg wet abalone, a bag of dry abalone and a bag of Lenovate ointment which could only be obtained with a prescription.

The younger man appeared in the Kemptonpark Magistrate’s Court and his brother in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

The brothers are facing charges of bribery, fraud, possession of diamonds, possession of ivory and possession of abalone.
