WEATHER WARNING: Severe rain, hail and flash flooding

A warning of possible flash floods, rain, hail and damaging wind was issued by the SA Weather Services on Friday.

Forecaster Lebogang Mashile said these extreme weather conditions were expected on Friday and Saturday.

Mashile said storms had already hit Pretoria, but they were not severe at this stage.

“We issued out a watch for hail in Vereeniging.”

According to a post doing rounds on social media, two squall lines were reportedly heading for Pretoria and Johannesburg on Friday.

“The squall lines are moving quite quickly and are due to hit Pretoria within the next hour (at 12:00). They are currently near Lanseria,” reads the post.

Mashile however, distanced herself from the allegations.

“The SA Weather Services cannot comment on such alerts as they were not issued by us,” she said.

“On Saturday, we expect a low of 11°C with a high of 30°C while on Sunday, we expect a low of 16°C with a high of 32°C,” said Mashile.

She said there was an 80 percent chance of showers and thundershowers on Friday and Saturday.

“These showers and thundershowers will be on and off. On Sunday, we expect a 30 percent chance of rain.”
