At previous postings at Mabopane and Garsfontein, he took over ailing police stations and propelled them to the top-performers in their clusters.

Solomons (50) told Rekord he would be working closely with the Garsfontein community.

He intended involving businesses and other concerned parties such as private security companies.

He would spend his first days identifying the problem areas, and would devise a strategy for dealing with crime hot spots, he said.

Sweep operations, including roadblocks and searches, could be one of the crime-fighting strategies he would introduce.

Solomons has been in the police force for 30 years.

He has spent many years in visible policing and area crime prevention, starting at Eersterust, from where he originally hails.

He has also had postings at Mabopane, Lyttelton, Silverton, Acacia and Pretoria Moot police stations.

“My vision is to decrease crime – and that goes hand-in-glove with community participation,” he said.

“I want to promote service delivery. The community must be happy.”
