Residents were joined by Mamelodi West police Sector 1, CPF and hostel dwellers in the cleanup of the area behind Itelereng crèche in Section A1 and behind Mamelodi Heritage Forum at Kingsley hostels.

The cleanup team found needles drug users used to shoot-up.

Police spokesperson, Captain Johannes Maheso said drug addicts would have to find for another hideout.

“We have identified a few of these areas where the drug addicts are smoking and some of the areas have been identified by community members,” said Maheso.

The CPF said some of the areas used by drug users had become a health hazard and that was why it joined cleanup team.

The drug hotspot at Kingsley hostel was infamous for robbery.

The cleanup included the cutting of the over grown grass, trees and other shrubbery used by criminals to hide.

The police said clearing crime hotspots was a proactive way to fight crime and they advised residents to also clean other hotspots in the area.
