Police are still searching for seven armed men who fled with over R800 000 after killing a man in the east of Pretoria.

Henry Kirstein was gunned down in his home in Mooiplaats on Thursday.

Boschkop police spokesperson Captain Marissa Van der Merwe said investigations were ongoing and a murder docket had been opened.

Van der Merwe said two security guards were patrolling plot 68 when five men approached them.

“Two of the men were armed.”

The security guards were held at gunpoint and assaulted. One was hit over the head and tied to the security gate while the second guard was taken to the house.

“The men went inside the house and shot Kirstein in the upper body. He later died on the scene,” said Van der Merwe.

Kirstein’s brother-in-law, Ge Joost, said the men entered the house and opened fire without a word.

He said Kirstein was sitting at the kitchen table when five men entered the house.

“They fired one shot and Henry died in front of his wife.”

The men tied up the second security guard and confronted Kirstein’s wife Eva, demanding to know where the safe was.

“They also wanted to know where her son was.”

Van der Merwe said the men fled with firearms, R800 000 in cash and an unconfirmed amount of US dollars.

The men also took cellphones and a torch.

Van der Merwe said two accomplices arrived shortly after the shooting. They were waiting outside and a vehicle picked up the group.

The spokesperson of security firm Brinant Group Stephen Wolmarans said an army of police and security firms responded to the attack around 22.20.

“We later received information that the suspects crossed the N4 between Pienaarspoort and Savannah Street. They were fleeing towards Bronkhorspruit Road.”

“We were told that the men had taken firearms from the scene and were now heavily armed. Unfortunately the men fled.”

A memorial service for Kirstein will be held in the 3CI Church, Plot 56 Saal Street Zwavelpoort on Thursday 9 March at 11:00.
