Dozens caught in city centre

Pretoria central police arrested 53 people in the city over various crimes this Easter weekend.

Spokesperson sergeant Tsietsi Lamola said those caught in Operation Paseka were expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court this week.

They were nabbed over crimes such as murder, common robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm, drug possession, public drinking, common assault related to domestic violence and possession of suspected stolen goods.

Lamola said a 23-year-old woman laid a charge of domestic violence against her boyfriend.

“It is alleged that a 23-year-old woman was assaulted by her boyfriend following an argument ensued between the couple in the morning of Saturday 15 April 2017,” Lamola said.

The alleged boyfriend was arrested and was facing a charges of common assault and domestic violence.

Lamola urged the public to report crime to the nearest police station.

“As the police, we urge our fellow community members to report any domestic violence-related issues to their nearest police station since a minor issue could lead to a serious crime,” he said.

“Let us break the wall of silence.”
