A 12-year-old La Montagne boy is on the mend after being flung in the air 40 metres when he was hit by a truck on Sunday.

Crinan Duncan was crossing the road on corner of Frangipani Street and Simon Vermooten Road with his father when the accident happened.

His sister, Carin, said that Crinan and his father were on their way to the filling station around 16:30.

“There was a power outage and the traffic lights were not working.”

Crinan was a bit ahead of their father, said Carin.

Other vehicle stopped at the traffic light, because it was not working.

“A nine-ton truck came from behind and passed all the traffic. It hit my brother.”

The truck was a write-off, she said.

“The radiator and filter were laying on the ground.”

She said that according to police officers on the scene Crinan would have been flung about 40m into the air as he was thrown from the one side of the road to the other.

“He was unconscious, but regained his consciousness a while later.”

He was taken to Life Wilgers hospital, but later transferred to Steve Biko Academic hospital.

She said that doctors initially feared that he had internal bleeding, but after various x-rays, this was ruled out.

Crinan luckily had various bruises and wounds on his face, toes, back, elbows and legs but nothing more serious.

He managed to eat for the first time on Wednesday without getting sick.

He was released from hospital the same day.

Carin said that she wished that drivers could be cautious on the road, especially when there was a power outage.

The Silverton police said that they would look into the matter at the time of going to print.
