A notorious drug den in Brown Street was raided when the Tshwane mayor visited the area earlier this week.

Tshwane mayoral spokesperson Sam Mgobozi said the purpose of the raid was to apprehend criminals taking drugs and stolen cable and other scrap metal merchants.

“The city will continue to conduct regular clean-up operations and arrest anyone found to be breaking the law,” Mgobozi said.

“There is still a lot to be done in dealing with the issue of substance abuse. We encourage residents to work with us and report cases of illicit drug trading as we charter a renewed fight against substance abuse.”

Mayor Solly Msimanga said his administration was serious about dealing with the drug problem in the city because it robbed young people of their future.

“Our preoccupation is to fight the drug problem while creating the opportunities for employment and productivity across the city to employ our people so that they may too live a better life and not be condemned to a life of poverty or even death. We have to rescue our lost generation and we have to leverage our regions and existing tools to make progress in this regard,” said Msimanga.

Councillor Leanne de Jager said the cleanup was hugely welcome.

“Brown Street has been neglected for many years which has led to an increase in drug trafficking, illegal gambling and prostitution and consequently increased criminal activity. The intervention introduced by the clean up by the metro and spearheaded by the mayor is hugely welcomed and forms part of his promise to stabilise, revitalise and deliver in the metro one ward at a time,” said De Jager.
