Twenty school children were killed on Friday, when the minibus taxi they were travelling in was involved in an accident near Bronkhorstspruit.

Gauteng basic education spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed this and said the accident occurred on the Groblersdal Road.

“Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi is rushing to the scene. More information will be shared in due course,” said Mabona.

The name of the school the children were enrolled in is unknown at this stage.

Mabona said he would provide more information as soon as it became available.

ER24 said in a statement that paramedics assessed the scene and found that approximately 20 children had been inside the vehicle when it collided with the truck.

Seven children were treated for their injuries and provided with advanced life support interventions before they were transported to various hospitals in the area for further treatment.

The cause of the collision is not yet known.
