In a statement issued by the department of education, MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the department was deeply saddened and shocked by the deaths of the 18 learners.

“Our learners, with a promising future, whose lives were cut short in this tragic manner, were travelling home when their minibus taxi crashed into a truck,” said Lesufi.

“It is believed the driver of the minibus underestimated the speed of the truck and collided with it as he was about to turn.”

Lesufi said police were still investigating.
