Mkhari has accused a group of businessmen who call themselves ‘Business Forum’ of disrupting the city’s waste management services.

“From time to time the affiliates of the forum disrupt the city’s waste management services.

“The disturbance is done under the pretext that no business opportunities are offered to them by the municipality,” said Mkhari in a scathing statement.

Mkhari has accused the group of attempting to hold the city at a ransom for failing to win a tender through the normal processes.

“No forum or business will be awarded a tender outside of the city’s normal tendering system that is transparent and fair. The days of favouritism are over and the public has to know that the action of the forum stands in the way of service delivery,” added Mkhari.

Mkhari said the forum’s members blocked all landfill sites in the city’s seven regions this week and threatened to render the city’s waste management services inoperable.

The city has vowed to obtain a court order against the forum and unleash law enforcement authorities on them.

“The deliberate destruction of the city’s property will not be allowed,” he said.
