A man was recently sentenced to four life terms for the rape of a 92 year-old in Groenkloof.

Police spokesperson Captain Anton Breedt said the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court handed down the four life sentences to the 36-year-old on 13 July.

“His accomplice was sentenced to 12 years in jail,” said Breedt.

He said the men, aged 35 and 36 years had broken into the elderly woman’s home in 2013 and one had also raped her.

Investigating officer Sergeant Hazel Maasdorp of the Sunnyside police welcomed the sentences.

Breedt said Maasdorp had invested a lot of her time and energy into her four-year investigation.

“After an intensive investigation and several expert testimonies, securing four life sentences and a 12-year conviction bring this matter to a close but not forgotten,” said Maasdorp.

She said the victim was receiving counselling for her trauma.

“Nothing will take away the bad memory of that dreadful night and will stay with the elderly woman for the remainder of her life.”

Breedt said fingerprints lifted from the scene linked the men to the crime and they were arrested at their respective homes four days later.

“They have been in custody since. Both tried for bail but were denied because of the severity of their crime,” Breedt said adding that the police were committed to the fight against crimes against women and children.

“We will always do everything possible to bring these perpetrators to justice.

“We want to urge the community to report any child abuse or incidents of sexual transgression towards woman and children.”
