Senior citizens exercise to keep fit

Excited members of the Senior Citizen club in Mamelodi West.

Senior citizens say spending time with each other makes them feel young and happy.

The vibrant elders spend time together from Monday to Wednesday between 08:00 and 12:00 playing games, exercising and discussing social issues in Mamelodi West.

The club was formed 15 years ago and consists of 63 members.

Last week Friday club members participated in a sport fun day organised by Altus Sport and they spent the day playing different


Organiser Lindiwe Mabona of Altus she said: “We had a fun day for grannies. This was after they approached us to organise this special day for them”

They played soccer and indigenous games at Ezazi primary school sports ground next to the Mamelodi West police station.

The elderly were so excited they asked Altus to return to help them with their exercise regimen.

Gogo Tshidi Chauke said they were grateful to Mabona and Altus.

“We are always happy when we are together. We always feel stress free because of the activities that we do and today it was just a fun day for us,” she said.

On the day the elderly learned about healthy diet and Altus donated fruit for the elderly to take to their homes.

The elders encouraged their peers, especially men, in Mamelodi join the club instead of sitting at home doing nothing.
