The Tshwane Central SAPS cluster held a sports and fun day at the Maritimo soccer club in Hatfield on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Colette Weilbach said this was to commemorate Heritage day.

“The various police station that comprise the cluster had decided to postpone their Heritage day celebrations because they were too busy with various operations to the end of September,” she said.

“Each station and unit within the cluster was given a brief, a culture to adopt for the day according to which they had to dress, prepare food, perform a dance and an exhibition,” said Weilbach.

Weilbach said this was done to demonstrate that police officers within the cluster embrace all cultures and differences and were unified in service to and protect all South Africans.

The police officers gave performances in different cultural attires. Brooklyn SAPS represented Afrikaner, Garsfontein Coloured, Lyttelton Zulu, Silverton Swati, Sunnyside Xitsonga and Venda, Moot Pedi, Villiera Sotho and the Flying Squad and K9 were representing the Indian culture.

“As the cluster, police officers want to create a culture where communities will work together with the SAPS to fight the source of crime and to create a heritage of law-abiding citizenry to ensure that together a safe and secure cluster is created for all living and working in the different policing precincts,” said Weilbach.
