A 65-year-old woman was the victim of an armed robbery at her house in the east of Pretoria on Monday afternoon.

Two armed men entered the woman’s house in Val de Grace along Stamvrug Street at around 15:00.

“The robbers ransacked the house and fled in a grey sedan vehicle with televisions and other household items,” police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said.

Weilbach said the woman did not sustain any injuries.

Police are still searching for the two suspects and have urged anyone with information to come forward.

Anyone who has information that can assist the police with their investigation can contact the crime stop number at 08600 10111 or SMS Crime Line on 32211.

Weilbach said the police have intensified operations to curb all so-called “trio crimes” (house robberies, business robberies and hijackings) during the festive season.

Police offered advice to community members on how to prevent house robberies:

– Be observant at all times. Report any suspicious vehicles that are parked in the driveway of a neighbour’s house.

– Develop a habit of locking your doors, even when you are home.

– Upgrade security measures at back doors, kitchen windows and sliding doors.

– Do not leave valuables like laptops and cell phones near an open window easily accessible from the outside.

– Remove valuable items from parked vehicles at home. (Theft of motor vehicles also happens at homes and inside security complexes).

– Talk to your domestic worker and gardener about safety issues. Upgrade security measures such as safety gates and burglar bars at the windows of their living quarters.

– Install panic buttons that can send out audible or silent alarms as soon as an intruder or threat is encountered at strategic positions throughout your house.

– Create and keep safe a register where serial numbers of electrical appliances are recorded. This will allow the police to circulate items immediately as stolen.

– In case of robbery, stay calm at all times and co-operate with the robbers – it may save your life. Do not touch or move anything, as you may destroy important evidence.
