The ruling ANC-led national government scored a dismal F with the Democratic Alliance opposition party when party leader Mmusi Maimane revealed his party’s government report card at Union buildings on Monday afternoon.

The report card, an appraisal of the ANC’s performance over the past year, shows a pattern of dismal performance across all departments.

Maimane said the ANC-led national government had stooped to new lows in its abuse of power, excessive looting and shameless execution of state capture without a hint of restraint.

“With ever-increasing unemployment, half of South Africans living in poverty, a social grants crisis, a 12th cabinet reshuffle, the horrifying Esidimeni tragedy and the downgrading of our economy to ‘junk status’, the ANC has collapsed our country and its economy.”

The DA gave President Jacob Zuma an F, the lowest score in the index.

Maimane said besides all the president’s failures, his greatest was the crushing of the economy which resulted in the credit rating downgrade.

“Under Zuma’s ANC, 9.4 million South Africans are unemployed; 52% live in poverty; and 17 million rely on inadequate social grants for survival.”

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa scored an E, with Maimane saying Ramaphosa had allowed the executive to treat parliament as its own circus and had failed to hold the the corrupt to account.

“2017 also marked the fifth anniversary of the Marikana massacre. Ramaphosa has not apologised, visited the area or met with the widows and survivors. Despite being one of the wealthiest people in SA, he hasn’t given a cent to the victims of Marikana.”

Maimane said the DA would continue to hold the ANC accountable in the less than two years the current administration still has left.

“We will continue to model coalition governments in cities across the country, showing South Africans that there is another choice at the ballot box come 2019.”

“We can remove the corrupt ANC and replace it with a coalition government focused on the people, not its own pockets and paycheques.”
