Security officers at a Pretoria nursing college have demanded the termination of their employer’s contract with the institution.

Protesting at the Prinshof campus of the SG Lourens college on Wednesday, they claimed Tshireletso security company had made unilateral deductions from their pay.

Labour union representative Philip Makwala accused the company of having taken money illegally from employees since 2014.

“There was no agreement for money to be debited. They claim that the money is for uniforms, but the workers bought their uniform when they started, so why would it require a monthly payments?” he said.

“They also say that some of the money was for penalties of misconduct. This was not initially communicated to the workers.”

Workers earned between R1 400 and R1 800 a month. An amount close to R400 was being debited monthly said Makwala.

The workers demanded that the money debited from their salaries be paid back.

The college could not be reached for comment.
