A woman was knocked down in an east shopping centre’s parking lot on Saturday evening by an unknown motorist.

Lumka Kwinana said she was standing in the parking lot when an allegedly drunk driver ran her over.

“He didn’t stop. He was arrogant even though he was wrong,” she said.

The 34-year-old woman went to report what happened at the Brooklyn police station on Monday.

“I wasn’t taken seriously when I got there. I had to make a noise and name-drop in order to be taken seriously,” she said.

She said she had lost faith in the police as she was given the run around when she went to report the incident.

“There are no police in South Africa,” she said.

Police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach told Rekord the case had been successfully opened.

“This comes after a motorist failed to stop his vehicle after it was involved in an accident,” Weilbach said.

She said the woman was knocked over at the centre at the corner of Atterbury Road and Lois Avenue.

“The driver of the blue Audi waited until the woman was out of the road then got back in his vehicle and sped off,” she said.

Weilbach said it was a criminal offence if motorists did not stop at the scene of an accident.

“The detective is following up information and is busy with the investigation,” Weilbach said.
