Situated in the bustling, cosmopolitan city of Tshwane, for over three decades Menlyn Park Shopping Centre has provided customers with more than just a shopping destination. It has set a new standard for super-regional shopping malls in Africa, providing world-class shopping, dining, entertainment and leisure experiences that continue to delight all customers.
2017 saw the first year of Menlyn Park’s recent development is open to the public. Beginning in 2014, Menlyn embarked on a mission to develop their first extension phase, based on environmentally-friendly design and construction principles.
The redevelopment, which was completed in 2016 and cost R2 billion, culminated with Menlyn Park being awarded a 4-star Green Star SA Retail Design rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), making it the first and only 4-star green rated mall in South Africa.
With the eco-friendly expansion increasing their floor space to over 177 000m2, it has become the largest shopping centre in Africa with a Food & Fun Court, Fashion Wing, Grocery Avenue and Central Park, an outdoor piazza.
The Food & Fun Court houses 14 fast food tenants and The Fun Company, making it the ideal place for family fun and entertainment. The glazed façade, along with a cylindrical LED screen that features a live DStv and social media feed, adds even more vibrancy to the already exhilarating space.
The Fashion Wing is located at the heart of the mall and boasts over 500 stores made up of local designers, international brands and flagship anchor stores. Along with this, they also offer the largest selection of women’s shoe stores in the country.
Grocery Avenue is the first of its kind in Pretoria and is home to Food Lovers Market, Checkers Hyper and Pick ‘n Pay. Showing their intimate knowledge of their shoppers’ habits, Grocery Avenue is easily accessible from Atterbury and Garsfontein roads, making it the perfect stop for anything from a quick pop-in to a large weekly shopping trip.
Last but not least, Central Park is the crown jewel of Menlyn Park’s recent development. The outdoor piazza is flanked by restaurants and provides shoppers with an opportunity to take advantage of Pretoria’s sunny climate. “Planted with Pride of India trees, the piazza is a meeting point and a magnificent events area.
Olive Ndebele, General Manager of Menlyn Park, says their customers’ ever-changing needs were a top priority during the redevelopment of the mall and will continue to be into the future.
“We wanted to enhance our shoppers’ overall experience,” she says, pointing out the multiple easy-access points and VIP lounges. But these value-added services are only two on an extensive list of services designed to make every customer feel like a VIP.
Strategically placed at on the upper level (at Grocery Avenue), Information Kiosks are operational during trading hours and offer a team of highly-trained customer care representatives to handle customer queries.
Other value-added services include a Muslim prayer room that is operational from noon to 21h00 daily, wheelchairs for customer use available from the Information Kiosks or security office, VIP and Diplomatic parking, along with Moms & Tots parking that is specially designed to accommodate prams. To round off the VIP experience, Menlyn Park also offers a high-end personal shopper for one-on-one styling services.
With an estimated 1.3 million people visiting Menlyn Park every month, many of them foreigners from the 170 neighbouring embassies and consulates, space has become a cultural and economic hub of Tshwane. In 2018, Menlyn Park strives to continue to provide entertaining spaces for families, world-class local and international retailers for fashionistas, dining areas for people to come together and inspiring spaces that enrich the lives of customers.
