UPDATE: Tshwane buses back on the road

Tshwane buses are back on the road, Tshwane metro said.

Tshwane bus services (TBS) were suspended on Thursday last week due to an illegal strike by Samwu-affiliated workers, forcing passengers to seek alternative transport.

The metro issued an ultimatum on the same day, saying workers should return to work or face disciplinary actions.

“The service would be back at full strength from the first shift on Monday morning,” spokesperson Lindela Mashigo announced.

He said that the decision to end the strike was taken on Friday.

“The striking workers resolved on Friday evening to go back to work after management served them with a notice, informing them that the strike was unprotected.”

Samwu regional secretary Mpho Tladinyane said workers were unhappy about working overtime and the outsourcing of work to external companies.

Mashigo said the metro was looking into the demands of the workers.

“Chief operations officer James Murphy undertook to personally address the issue of overtime payment and assured them that the process was already underway to effect payment due to them.”

Mashigo added that the metro was not happy with the frequent strikes by workers.

“We wish to reiterate our profound and sincere apology once more to our bus commuters who have been adversely affected and inconvenience by the work stoppage.”

“We would like to assure them that we will endeavour to curb the random TBS strike action from becoming a regular occurrence.”
