UPDATE: Trial of former top cop postponed

Former police commissioner general Khomotso Phahlane.

The corruption trial of acting police chief Lt-Gen Khomotso Phahlane and two others was postponed on Monday.

He, his wife Beauty and co-accused Durand Snyman would be back in the Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria on 7 June.

The postponement was to allow for pre-trial procedures to be completed.

The three were each granted R10 000 bail last month.

The case docket was handed over to the defence team on Monday to allow them an opportunity to prepare for the trial.

Phahlane and his wife are accused of taking bribes from police supplier Keith Keating of Forensic Data Analyst, which the State alleges are a form of gratuity.

It is alleged Keating bought cars from Snyman’s car dealer for Phahlane and his wife as a bribe to secure tenders from the police.

Keating is reported to have made payments into Durand’s account under the name of “John Doe”.

Keating won a R1 billion contract with the police and, according to the charge sheet, the three have been charged under the prevention and combating of corrupt activities act.

Keating has so far not been charged.
