Megaphase expert advice: Saving energy this winter

Winter seasons are always characterised by skyrocketing electricity consumption due to the heavy dependence on this resource by households and commercial buildings. The need for electric blankets, hot water and air conditioning during this cold season all contribute towards increased electricity demand. This demand consequently translates into huge electricity bills. How best can you save energy this winter and avoid paying huge electricity bills?

Check the insulation of your house

Poor insulation if not well monitored can be one of the main sources of thermal heat loss in homes. Good insulation will keep warm air in the home and cold air outside, reducing the amount of energy needed to provide heat. Consider getting someone in to look at your insulation; it may be an expense this winter, but it will save you money in the long run.

Switch from regular to solar geyser

A geyser is usually the biggest electrical appliance in a home and consumes a huge percentage of electricity. Switching to a solar powered geyser will therefore dramatically cut down the electricity cost.

Start using a gas stove

A gas stove provides many benefits such as: paying less on gas than electricity; it speeds up your cooking time as you don’t have to wait for the conventional stove plates to warm up; and when load shedding hits you’re at least covered when it comes to tea, coffee, and cooking! It’s definitely something to invest in that will benefit you in the long run.

Replace old appliances with energy efficient appliances

Appliances can only last for so long, and when it’s time to replace them, be sure to check out their labels and energy ratings. You want appliances that will use less energy than the old one did in order to save electricity, so buy appliances that have an ‘energy efficient’ label orating on them.

 Opt for light-emitting diodes (LEDs)

Replacing conventional bulbs with LED alternatives can add up to significant savings. Residential LEDs — especially Energy Star-rated products — use at least 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer. LED string lights consume much less energy than standard lights and switching to LED lights can produce serious savings if you tend to keep your lights on for hours at a time.

Turn off or put a timer on your swimming pool pump

Pool pumps consume lots of electricity. You can reduce the running time interval by up to two hours and save some electricity. Since algae growth decreases during the colder months, you don’t need to keep the pool filter pump going day in and day out. Spend some time to see how long your pump needs to clean your pool and work off of that. Also, invest in a pool cover – it will keep the pool cleaner, which means fewer backwashes and less use of the pump.

Practice common energy saving tips

You can also save a lot of electricity by applying simple tips such as replacing heaters with jerseys and blankets, taking showers instead of using bathtubs, closing all windows, curtains and doors during the day to retain the heat and simply turn off all lights and appliances that you don’t need.
