No initiation schools for 2018 in Gauteng

No initiation school for 2018.

With the looming initiation school season, the metro wanted to remind Tshwane parents of the suspension of initiation schools’ intake across the province.

This follows a decision by the CLR Rights Commission to suspend all initiation schools in Gauteng for this year.

The move is aimed at addressing concerns regarding criminality and gross malpractices at initiation schools.

Initiation season is usually between May and July each year.

The city of Tshwane will not process any applications, or issue any certificates, for the operation of initiation schools this season.

Chief Ndanduleni Tshivhula of Tshivhula initiation in Mamelodi East said “though it came as a blow”, the school has no choice but to comply.

He also said parents should be made aware there will be no initiation school intake for 2018 – for both boys’ and girls’ initiation schools.

“Although Tshwane was found to be fairly in order, the city fully supports the resolution as issued by the CRL,” said Tshwane health MEC Sakkie du Plooy.

“Any initiation school found to be operating within the jurisdiction of the city should be deemed illegal,” he said.

“Law enforcement processes will take its course.”

Issues behind the suspension included: the mushrooming of unregistered initiation schools; violence; murders and assaults; abductions; extortion; illegal occupation of land; initiation schools which have turned into havens for criminals; and non-compliance to municipal by-laws.

Parents should contact the police about initiation schools defying the suspension at 08600-10111 or contact Chief Ndanduleni Tshivhula of Tshivhula Initiation on 076-355-9216.
