With winter looming, first-year student Yuvisthi Naidoo has started a blanket drive in a bid to keep the less fortunate warm during the coming months.

The 20-year-old Naidoo, a bachelor of science student at the University of Pretoria, said she came up with the initiative following a vacation in the Western Cape where she noticed scores of people sleeping on pavements without proper blankets.

“I was very touched and decided to do something closer to home to help people stay warm during winter, so the season is a bit more bearable.”

Naidoo approached Brooklyn SAPS to allow her to put a donation box for blankets in the front lobby of the station.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Weilbach said the station would also be collecting new and used winter-weather blankets for the less fortunate.

Naidoo said the collected blankets will be given to two organisations, the Homeless Solutions and the Tshwane Leadership Foundation.

Homeless Solutions is an organisation that aims to aid and support those individuals who have become homeless as a result of unemployment.

The Tshwane Leadership Foundation gives support towards women and young girls at risk, homeless people and other people in need in the inner city.

Naidoo said animal blankets would be donated to Tshwane SPCA and Wollies Animal Shelter, as animals are also very close to her heart.

People can drop off blankets for donation at Brooklyn SAPS; Bookmark on the University of Pretoria Hatfield campus; SANBS at Hatfield Plaza; and Van Schaik bookstore in Hatfield.

“It is commendable to see young people getting involved in a social cause,” Weilbach said.

“Community members are requested to fully support this youth initiative.”
