A councillor in the east of Pretoria has challenged local leaders to a street cleanup.

Residents of Pretoria East heeded ward 82 councillor Siobhan Muller’s call to clean the streets at the weekend.

“They gathered in several locations in Lynnwood, Brooklyn and Waterkloof from 08:30 to cut grass and remove weeds.

“I want to challenge other leaders in the area to go into the streets and ensure that the environment is kept clean,” Muller said adding this could be a monthly effort.

She said she was pleased with the number of people who came out to clean the streets.

“There was an overwhelming response from residents. I had people coming to me especially churches and asking what can they do to contribute to community building.”

She said such projects were helpful to community-building.

“People are tired of being locked in their houses and are waiting for an opportunity to contribute to making their communities better and safer.”

Muller said some municipal workers had joined the effort.

They cleaned along Anderson Street in Brooklyn, Matroosberg Street in Ashlea Gardens, Rosemary Street and Lynnwood Road in Lynnwood, Clark and Olivier streets in Waterkloof.
