Metro allocates millions to EPWP

Millions of rands have been allocated to the Tshwane metro’s job creation programme in the 2018/19 financial year.

“For the coming financial year, we have allocated R137,2 million towards expanded public works programme initiatives,” mayor Solly Msimanga said during his budget speech earlier this week.

The programme aimed to decrease the 26,7 percent rate of unemployment in the city by providing residents who registered on its database with temporary work opportunities.

Msimanga previously said: “EPWP aims to create employment opportunities for the unemployed and low skilled people of South Africa through the delivery of public and community goods and services.”

In the past financial year, the city aimed to create over 20 000 jobs and was said to be aiming towards creating the same number of jobs during the 2018/19 financial year.

“Our goal for this past financial year was the creation of 23 000 job opportunities which is what we are committed to doing once again the 2018/19 financial year as well,” Msimanga said.

He said he hoped the employment opportunities would contribute to decreasing the high rate of poverty in the city and country as well.

“It is imperative that we play our role as a city in facilitating job opportunities.”
