An Elardus Park woman has told of the trauma and financial difficulties she and her daughter are facing after losing all their belongings in a fire.

Nanette Snyman and her 10-year-old daughter Chenel were away when a fire damaged their apartment in the early hours of last Wednesday.

The pair returned to find their home on the top floor of a block of flats in flames.

“We lost everything in the fire, we have nothing left from the house,” she said.

“The incident was traumatic, seeing everything you build over the years all go up in flames.”

The family lost their groceries for the month, clothes and furniture, the clothes they were wearing were the only items they had.

Snyman said that she was grateful to the members of the community, friends and family who were lending a helping hand.

The family had received donations of food parcels, bedding and food vouchers.

“We have been through some rough moments since the fire but we are doing better one day at a time. Everyone around us is so supportive and that helps a lot. ”

It is not known what may have caused the fire, but Snyman said she was glad that they were not in the house when the fire started.

She said Chenel will soon be writing exams and the school offered her counselling to ensure that she was able to cope.

“I have never met a stronger 10-year-old than my daughter. Even though she lost everything, her toys…her everything, she still smiles and gives her ultimate best to be positive.

“She has been my rock a few times the last week.”

Lyttelton police said they had no reason to suspect arson.

“A report by the fire department suggests that it was an accident, so no criminal charges are being investigated by the police,” said police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.

The family lives with Snyman’s mother in Pretoria.
