Significant repair work has been made by the city’s electricians and technicians at the burnt-down Wapadrand substation.

The substation was completely destroyed by a blaze on Tuesday, leaving several Pretoria east suburbs in the dark.

Tshwane MMC for utility services Darryl Moss said 100 percent of cables have been identified and the protection and test sections were continuing with the wiring of the protection scheme.

“The building of the temporary platform for the new panels has been completed and mounting of the circuit breaker panels on the platform is currently in progress and 16 out of 26 have already been installed.

“They have also installed the protection equipment in the shipping container which will be used as a temporary facility. Workers are currently connecting the protection system to the transformers. Main feeder cables to the satellite substations will be joined as soon as mounting of circuit breaker panels is completed.”

Moss said the progress made on site was in line with the forecast made. “Power will be progressively switched on during the period of Saturday evening to Sunday morning.

“The city wishes to thank residents and businesses for the support the team that is working 24 hours round the clock, receives, it has been truly remarkable and is much appreciated.”

Ward 44 councillor Ernst Botha said the work already completed in terms of having a proper foundation for the control switches was notable.

He said considering the fact that the switches were usually installed on a level concrete foundation inside a building, the fact that these teams engineered ways of overcoming these obstacles in such a short time, working in an unfamiliar environment, but making it work, was a testament to the calibre of people working on this project.

Meanwhile, these areas remain affected Lombardy, Tierpoort, Faerie Glen, Zwavelpoort, Silver Lakes and some parts of Equestria.
